Pink Saturday

There are many ways to say I love you. ~ Mr. Rogers

That's so true Mr. Rogers. Seeing a handkerchief always takes me back to my childhood. My mother always carried handkerchiefs when I was a child. They came in handy for so many things. One of my fondest memories is of Mama making "quiet toys" out of her handkerchief for me while we sat in church on Sunday mornings. I think she understood how hard it was for a six year old to sit still for more than a minute with nothing to entertain them. So, when I started to wiggle, out would come her neatly ironed handkerchief. She could fold and roll that little square into what I always thought looked like bunny ears. I would play with that a while, then pull an "ear," and it would be a square again. Then she would roll it into a baby swing with two little babies snuggled in the middle. I would sit and swing, swing, swing my little twins for quite a while. Then I would pull that open and start trying to do those feats of magic myself. And before I knew it, church would be over! Then one day, with Mama's patient help, and lots of practice on my part, I made my own bunny ears and even went on to make those little twins.

I never carried a handkerchief when my children were little, just a wad of paper tissues, so I didn't pass my mama's talent on. I wonder if I could still make these wonderful objects that make time go by so quickly for a child. Think I'll go try. Excuse me a moment please.....

No, I'm sorry to say, I don't remember how to make them. I think I need to go visit my mama and get her to show me how to make these again. She is 80 years old now, but thankfully, she's very healthy and sharp of mind. I do hope she remembers how to make them, I need to practice up because I hope to be a grandmother some day.

By the way, I bought all these handkerchiefs from an estate sale for ten cents each. This last one is my favorite, so I made it into a pillow for our bed. Now I get to see it every day. And, oh yes, I now carry a handkerchief in my purse...always.

No luck with either email. I've checked into everything I know to check,I've readjusted the spam filter, just in case you're landing in spam mail. I've emailed to your addy before..did you get my email? I simply don't know what to do,but I won't give up..that pretty red apron belongs to you and you're gonna have it.
I'm gonna post on my blog the problem we're having and see if anyone has a solution to the problem..or any ideas..I'm just head spinning here trying to figure out the problem. Could it be because you have a gmail account and I have a yahoo account?

  25. How sweet this story is about your Mom and the fact you still have her is even more special. I used vintage hankies for pockets on a couple aprons I made which turned out kind of nice. Nan

  26. What a lovely post, Sherry! Your mother was so smart. I hope you do get her to teach you how to create those precious handkerchief "toys" ....then maybe YOU would share it with us on a Pink Sat!!! I have a little "busy bag" that I have here for my grand girl for when she attends church with us. It's actually a scrapers bag...one with little compartments all the way around and I have little items (soft ones so they don't make a big old sound when they hit the tile floor at Church) for her to pull out and play with/look at. This has helped a lot...she's just 3 1/2 and that hour long church service is just more than she can quietly handle! :)

Thanks for such a darling and sweet post! Happy Pink Saturday! Dana
