Pink Saturday

I love Spring! I love those precious early morning moments between sleep and wakefulness. Bird song is drifting through the open windows, and along with it comes the soft clucking of the chickens and the crowing of our rooster. The sounds speak to me, "God's in His heaven and all's right with your world." I lay there a while just drinking in the peacefulness of the moment and thanking God for the gift of a beautiful new day. But I don't lay there long...I can't wait to get my day moving.

After enjoying my favorite breakfast of buttered toast and freshly brewed coffee, I throw a load of laundry in the washer. I sometimes do a load on days like this just so I can hang it out on the line. Every time I spy it out of my kitchen window it says "home" to me. I come back inside and open up windows and doors allowing the scent of freshly blooming honeysuckles to waft through the house. The breeze stirs the lace curtains at the windows, and all of a sudden I hear a loud "BANG!" Oh no, it's our bedroom door again, it just can't seem to stay open with the breeze circulating through the house. But I find a remedy for that. I round up an old upholstery sample book someone gave me and select a good thick (pink and yellow) fabric from which I make a doorstop that will hold the door open no matter how strong the wind gets.

After a day of chores and daydreaming, I look forward to Neil coming home from work. I'm peeking out through the screen door as his truck is coming up our long driveway. He smiles and waves at me even before he opens his truck door. I love homecomings. He gets a chance to rest a little, while I put the finishing touches on our simple meal. I call our boys into the kitchen for supper where we all prepare our plates and glasses of iced tea to take out on the front porch. We sit in the rockers and porch swing enjoying the meal and the slow, easy talk. We reconnect. We're comfortable with each other. This is home.

After a few chores, Neil and I take a very enjoyable stroll up our country road. Neighbors call to us as we walk by. We know all our neighbors and they know us. We stop by to chat with Robert, the neighbor with the green thumb. He's out working in his garden this evening. He's always a step ahead of us with his garden work, but that's okay, he's also very willing to share his vast knowledge of vegetable gardening with us. Another neighbor is out tending to his horses. We stop by and swap fishing stories with him awhile. Then we take our time walking back home. Sitting out on the front porch again, I notice the lightning bugs have made their spring appearance. That brings back lots of childhood memories for me...catching a jar full and bringing them in for a nightlight...making a cigarette by putting one of their lights on the end of a stick...gross I know, but that's what we sometimes did.

Yes, Spring is a wonderful, happy season for me, and our community is certainly living up to its name ~ Pleasant Valley. I hope you are enjoying the season in your neck-of-the-woods. I would love for you to leave me a comment this week telling me where your neck-of-the-woods is.

Here are a couple of places you might want to visit. First of all, Beverly's blog, where you can enjoy visiting the other members of the Pink Saturday Club, and here's a link to instructions for the pyramid doorstop. (I filled mine with rice instead of sand and I didn't use interfacing because my fabric was thick.)

Hope you have a terrifically Happy Pink Saturday!

  1. Oh I'm the first to leave a comment on this gentle, and beautiful post! I love the peace you exude in your writing. The way you speak of your daily ritual is endearing, and it makes me want to relish in domestic bliss....throwing a load of laundry in and hanging it out on the line for the shear pleasure of watching it blow in the wind!

thanks for taking the time to show us a piece of your world....I loved every word!

  2. I loved your story, especially this: "We're comfortable with each other. This is home." Very special!

I'm just north of Philly and spring started fast and hot, and has turned cool and slow. Still plenty of time to get planting done, but I can't wait to see the veggie garden in place!

  6. Hi Sherry...
You described my life in the country..soft and gentle and sweet and easy on the soul. It's not that way anymore and I sure miss it.
    Love your doorstop..it's gorgeous.

  7. I love the design for that doorstop - not only extremely pretty, but so practical with the 'handle' at the top. Talking of your laundry - I'm so jealous! We have a 1st floor flat - 2nd floor in the States (hence the name of my blog) so we only have the strip of garden in the front of the block. Needless to say, we aren't allowed to hang washing out. So even on the hottest days (it's already 22 degrees C here in London, with the perfect gentle breeze) I still have to use my tumble drier. Or drape wet washing around the flat, hang it from the doorways, and then the place looks like a laundry. Oh!for fresh air.

    Happy Pink Saturday!

  11. What a lovely post with your descriptions of "life in the country". We too are enjoying a few weeks at our country home in Kentucky. The dogwoods were in full bloom this week and redbuds were being replaced with green leaves. Last evening we invited famiy to enjoy a cookout in our backyard. We enjoyed my birthday gift from DH (a fire pit made of wonderful stones).

    Happy Pink Saturday.

  18. I always enjoy visiting your blog. I was relaxing and enjoying your day right along with you. The little things in life are more precious to me than some of the bigger. After a terrible storm last night, the sun came out here in Fort Worth, Texas and I enjoyed the rest of the day. Always happy when you stop by.

  19. Sherry, Thank you for visiting my blog today, I cannot find the little tag with the name of the pink flowers. I planted them about three years ago. They might be carnations, they bloom from May until August. Love them. It sounds like Pleasant Valley is a wonderful place to live--very idelyic. Love the way you bring it to life. Have a wonderful week.

  20. Happy stroll-with-you Pink Saturday. It feels like we just sat and talked about our day. That was a wonderful post. I know what you mean. The same thing happens here - even the bang of the door slamming because the wind is stronger than I thought. Of couse, the Dog Dude doesn't go for that and just hates the wind monster to begin with. I really like the doorstop idea. Thanks! You know, I thought I was following you. Sometimes, I think I'm doing that when I'm not. So, I'll fix that in a minute. And, did I tell you thanks for following me? Thanks. Jenn

  27. Hi Sherry,

    Happy PiNk!!

I loved reading your post..you have a way with the written word. ♥ I felt like I was there with you.

And I love, love the doorstop! Gotta look at the tutorial for that. The door to our lower level doesn't like to stay open so this would be great.

Thanks for visiting and for wishing recovery to my Thomas.

    Have a wonderful day...
    Hugs,

  30. And what a beautiful day it was . . . it is that you get to spend with. Everything is just so nice to picture. Even the simplest thing we do in our everyday lives mean so much. If only every person have your eye. I too believe that if we only see through what surrounds us - it is beautiful. And it encourages you to be one too. And we are thankful that God let us experience it.

    Belated Happy PS, Sherry!
