Homemade Apple Butter

My sweet parents brought me a large box of June apples yesterday and it made me think of my love for apple butter. So, I got busy peeling, coring, and chopping up about six pounds of the apples.

I grabbed a big mixing bowl and dumped in four cups of sugar, 2 well-rounded teaspoons of cinnamon (I love cinnamon!!!), and 1/4 teaspoon of allspice. I stirred these up well...

...put the apples in my Crock pot and sprinkled the dry mixture over them. I stirred them all up and turned the slow cooker on high...

...then I made a run to the composter with all my apple peels and cores. Well, I did stop and give the chickens a little fruity treat on the way there. They love apple peels!

I turned the Crock pot to low after the first hour and cooked the apple butter all night. We woke up to the most delicious smelling house this morning! I am trying out my apple butter on one of my homemade biscuits as I type and I have only one word for it....YUMMMMEEEEE!!!!!

I got the basic recipe from Allrecipes.com.

  4. Ok, you've done it now! I'm gonna make this and my house is gonna smell so dosh-darned good :) I'll add apples to my grocery list. Ya know, I was gonna go grocery- shopping today but, my DH decided he wanted to go to the hospital. Long story short, I didn't get to the store yet. So, i can add the apples to my list :) Sherry, you must be the bestest homemaker there is with your homemade soap and apple butter and a composter and chickens! I wanna be like you when I grow up!

  6. Sounds great! I actually stopped at a strangers house a couple years ago, introduced myself and asked her if she had any plans for the beautiful pears her tree was loaded with... She said no and asked what I would do with them. Pear Butter! It was my Thanksgiving favor that year and everyone loved it! (I did stop back and give the gracious lady a jar too!) Enjoy :@)

  7. I use my crock pot to make applesauce as well. I love the way my house smells while I'm making it. (Far better than any candle). Thanks again for partying with us at our "Canning Week Blog Party"

Can you tell me how much this makes. I have to decide if I should can or freeze.

  12. jbkazooty,
I'm so sorry your apple butter didn't turn out well. I read over my instructions again and nothing was left out. I do know that slow-cookers cook at different temps though. My older one doesn't get near as hot as my newer. My advice is to put it all back in your slow-cooker and keep cooking it until it gets to the consistency you want, even if it takes many hours. I cooked mine until it was very thick. If you put in the right ratio of sugar to apples it should get there eventually. You can also remove the lid of your slow cooker to speed things up a little. Please let me know how it turns out.~ Sherry
