Peace in Quiet

Do you find peace in quiet?
I do.
It can be a challenge at times to find quiet though.

The tv seems to be my greatest adversary when searching for quiet away from home.

It's rare to find a restaurant that doesn't have a tv that can be seen and heard from every table in the room.

I prefer the sound of my family's or my friends' voices to the sound of a blaring tv.
I don't think we should have to raise our voices to enable us to hear each other above the tv's noise while enjoying a meal together.
And even if I'm dining alone, I much prefer my own company to the tv's.  It's quite often loud and rude.

Rare too, is the doctor's or dentist's waiting room with no tv on the wall.
I prefer to choose my own entertainment.
I like to see magazines on the table.
I can choose the magazine I want to look at.
Or I can choose to not look at a magazine at all.
I can bring my book along from home to enjoy without the interrupting sounds of the tv voices.
Who says I want to watch the tv program someone else chose for me this day?

I sometimes envy my husband's talent of focusing on only one thing at a time.
If I could do that then I could tune out the tv and focus only on the words in my book.

I often crave quiet.
Quiet is usually easy to find at home.
I can take a seat in one of the rockers on my front porch and I'm immediately greeted with quiet, and peace soon follows.

On this cool Fall morning there were few sounds to be heard while watering my front porch flowers.
And all the sounds I heard were welcomed; birds singing, a soft rain falling, a little breeze stirring while helping a few leaves to the ground that they have begun to carpet.

Sometimes quiet is even hard to be found in places where you most expect it; church for instance.
I know my likes are probably considered old-fashioned but I still enjoy a quiet, reverent atmosphere to worship in.  That doesn't mean I think there should never be upbeat, excited music and speaking in church.  But I also crave a little time set aside for quiet worship.  We are usually blessed both ways in our little church.  I have to admit though that my soul usually feels more refreshed and fed by the quiet time.

What about you?
Do you find peace in quiet?

or things too wonderful for me.
But I have stilled and quieted my soul...

  1. Sherry, We do not have TV at home so I am doubly bothered by it almost everywhere I go. I actually complimented my son's orthodontist for NOT having TV in his waiting room. I think I will start asking for quiet. I am paying after all. Angela

  2. Angela,

We have a tv but it is only used for Netflix and DVD's. No cable, satellite, or antenna.

I'm glad to find out I'm not the only one bothered by tv's in public places.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  3. If it is not quiet - how can you hear?
    The baby cry
    The lark sing
    A call for help
    Wholeheartedly agree with you.

  4. And to continue with justjill's comment... how about the voice of God? I think the inability to "just be" is epidemic. People cannot drive for being on cell phones, can't even grocery shop- hiking this weekend I saw 2 dad's with their kids on cell phones!!! Different pet peeve but I think still part of the same problem... Thanks for letting me vent. : ) Off to make a hearty pot of beef stew.Perfect day for it here in Rome! Angela

  5. I crave it and if I have a particular noisy period, I strive hard to get back to quiet.
