Summer Memories

My summer reads (re-readings actually) are stirring many memories of my childhood.

The Help, because of the southern setting in the 1960's.

And Ramona Quimby while not a necessarily a southern setting is about a little girl growing up in the 60's.  (And, my current haircut reminds me of Ramona's.  I should never have picked up the scissors. Wah!)

Summer, most especially, is the backdrop for most of my memories.  Memories...some good...well, I choose to remember "mostly" the good ones because that's the way I am.

My Background:

I was born in July 1959.  (That would make me what?  About 29 now? )   đŸ˜‰   So, most of my childhood memories span the 1960's.

I've lived in, or right outside of, the same little Alabama college town all my life.  My daddy worked at the cotton mill just up the street from our mill village home.  Mama was a stay-at-home mom most of my life, except for the five years she worked in housekeeping at the nearby college.

My aunt, uncle and two boy cousins lived next door to us and my maternal grandparents lived just four houses up the street.

Daddy got an hour lunch break at the mill and was able to come home for lunch since we lived only two minutes away from his job.  Mama cooked a 12:00 mid-day meal which we called dinner.  We would have supper some time after Daddy got off work at 4:00 in the afternoon.  Dinner leftovers were usually put in the cooled oven to await suppertime.  And no, as far as I know, none of us ever got food poisoning from food left out of the fridge all afternoon.

In my memory I can still smell the pintos, fried okra and biscuits cooking.  And when I smelled boiling tea, I knew Daddy would soon be home for dinner and for our own special game of hide-and-seek.  It usually went something like this:
I would find the "perfect" hiding place.  A place Daddy would never think to look in.  But he always found me immediately.  "Daddy, how did you find me so quick?"  I'd ask, amazed.  "I just smelled you,"  he always answered with a smile.
Not until I was grown did Mama crush my image of my daddy's extraordinary sense of smell by telling me she usually told him where I was hiding so that we could get on with dinner.

Electric Fans, Air Conditioners, and a New Bedroom

As an adult, something as simple as switching on an electric fan in the summer brings back those long ago memories.  I think I was probably ten years old or older before we got our first window air conditioner.  Until then, and even after that life-changing event, a fan was still a necessity that  we could not have lived without.

No matter how hot and humid the day, Mama wouldn't turn on the ac while Daddy was at work because Daddy didn't get to work in an air conditioned space.  He worked on the mill's shipping/receiving yard.  But on those hot, smothery afternoons, you bet Daddy would turn on the ac as soon as he walked in the door.  I don't know for a fact, but I think he would have appreciated the house already being cool when he got home.

Back to the electric fans:  The ac was only used to cool the main living areas of our small house; the living room, kitchen, and the bathroom (if the door wasn't closed).   And that electricity hog ac was turned off at night when we went to bed anyway, meaning sweltering bedrooms all the time.  (We didn't heat our bedrooms in the winter either, but that's another batch of stories.)

I shared a bedroom with my older sister and the electric fan; just the three of us.  When I was very young, my sister and I shared a double bed and I slept next to the wall, where I didn't feel a whole lot of air coming from the box fan sitting way down on the floor.  I would wake up all sweaty, wrapped like a hotdog in my sister's cast-off bed covers, with my face smushed up against the wall.  And it wasn't just your normal smooth sheetrocked  wall.  No, evidently the 1960's style for walls was a roughed-up finish of some sort.  I'm guessing it was supposed to look like a textured plaster wall.  I sported many skinned knees and elbows for sleeping too close to, and being too friendly with that pale pink wall.

Then, a dream-come-true happened!  Daddy started making plans to build another room on to our four-room house.  This room was to be a brand-new bedroom for my sister and me.  And unlike our old bedroom, everyone wouldn't have to walk through it to get into the rest of the house.  And Daddy was even building us two closets!  One for me - all mine and only mine - and one for my much-more-grown-up-than-me sister.  (She's eight years older than me.)

It seems the dreaming stage for this new room lasted for years.  I'm sure that's just because I'm looking back through a child's eyes.  But that room finally became a reality and Daddy did it all by himself.  My Daddy was the smartest, strongest, bravest man (in my eyes) that ever lived.

This beautiful room had a shiny hardwood floor that Daddy sealed with the same type of sealant used on the cotton mill's wood floors.  Nothing would scratch that light amber colored floor.  And the sealant made the floor so shiny, I was sure anyone could see under my skirt just like an image in a mirror.  The walls of the new room were covered with a medium-colored paneling (the newest style).  No more pink walls for us.  And then....

Moving Day!  I'm sorry to say that I don't really remember the actual moving.  I don't really remember how old I was - pretty young I suspect.  But, I do know we moved that electric box fan in with us.  And at some point, my sister and I got separate beds because this room was large enough for two!  In the summer months (and also spring and fall), that fan's breeze was aimed between our beds each night.  I remember dangling my head, and as many limbs as I could,  over the side of my bed, trying to catch a cooling touch of the fan's breath.  I would dread getting up in the mornings because as soon as I got out from under that fan, into the hot, humid air, I would feel like I was melting.

And in front of that fan was the best (and coolest) place to dry my just-shampooed hair.  But that's a tale for another day...

The Summer of Sweetness

Earlier in the summer, I declared this my
Summer of Sweetness

Why? Because I had come into the summer beating myself up over a strained relationship I had (still have) with a close loved one. I dwelt on it almost constantly, day and night.  It pulled me down and stressed me out.  My body was beginning to rebel.  It's amazing what can happen to a body when it is stressed, things I never dreamed that could be stress-related, but certainly have found them to be.

I did everything I knew to do about the strained relationship, but couldn't fix it.  So, I had to release the problem, as much as possible anyway, and start treating myself with kindness.  I wanted a reminder of my new theme, because I know me, I'll go right back to my fretting and beating myself up without some kind of reminder.  What would remind me of sweetness, softness and love?

                            I know!
The scent of Strawberries and Cream!
So, I set out to surround myself with the scent.    I start the day out by indulging myself with a sweet~scented shampoo and conditioner.
www.vo5haircare.com

I take my time and enjoy the sweet scent every morning as I remind myself that life is sweet and I am loved.

(As an aside; I have rediscovered VO5 shampoos and conditioners!  But that is a post for another day.)

Then I went to Ulta with a gift card in hand (that I'd had since my birthday last July!) and found other sweet reminders for my Summer of Sweetness.

My evening shower routine is sweetly scented with The Body Shop's Strawberry Shower gel.

And then I soften all the rough spots with
                                     Strawberry Body Yogurt, also from
                                                                    The Body Shop.

So, surrounded by all these reminders of the sweetness in my life, do I ever digress back to the fretting and trying to fix everything myself?  Yes.  But if I really focus on what is good in my life, what is right, what is sweet, then I climb right back out of that hole and carry on.

For the happy heart, life is a continual feast.

Back In Business!

I'm back after a loooong blog break!  Last year was quite a roller coaster ride for our family with ups and downs but we're still on our feet and all is well.  God is good!

So, I hope to be back with postings of my little life....the simple little things I enjoy doing that makes life in our home a softer and cozier place to be.

Sweet hubby and I have watched some old Mary Tyler Moore Show dvd's lately and I love the coziness of Mary's apartment.  It always seems to be winter time there and her apartment is so bright and inviting.  It makes you want to sit down at her table and share a cup of coffee with her.  That's what I strive for in my home, a sit down and stay a while spot.  I hope my BlogSpot is just an extension of that too.

So, I hope you will sit down and stay awhile with me.  I'll be back soon with another cup of coffee and maybe we can have a nice little chat.  Welcome Back!!!

My week in review

This has been a week of every day ~ but fun stuff!

Bike riding

My bike was a special birthday gift from my special hubby five years ago.
He picked it out himself and surprised me with it.
I think he did a great job.
It is so Me.
I especially love the swirlies on it.

***
I helped sweet hubby give our camper her bath.
Can you tell she doesn't have any "shoes" on?
She's getting new ones for our upcoming camping trip.
One of our sons said, "You might be a redneck if you have a camper up on blocks in your driveway."

***

I've actually done a little more cooking this week than I have in the past few weeks.
One night I cooked chicken in the slow cooker and then cooked Aldi's Chicken flavor Vermicelli & Rice and stirred them together.

I steamed some veggies and baked a loaf of bread in my bread machine.
And it was a quite tasty meal, if I say so myself.

***

I've done a little gardening.

And I had such sweet help with watering my flowers.

Grandchildren are such a joy!

***
Today finds me going out for lunch with my friends.
Life is sweet when it's filled with such sweet people.

***
Thank you, my sweet friend, for visiting me today.
Hope you leave me a message, I enjoy comments so much!

Happiness in the Everyday

I find happiness, yes, even peace and contentment, in the every day things in life.
Cleaning my home brings me a sense of rightness.  Cooking comforts me.
That's why I'm feeling so good today because I've started the day off with some of those little comforts.

On Monday, after a full weekend, I like to start by throwing in a load of laundry and then vacuuming the floors.

The bright sun shining through the lace curtains in my little sitting area makes me smile.

While hanging my laundry on the line, I take the time to look around my backyard and say a "thank You" for the beauty I see all around me.

I go back inside and mix up my granola cereal.
It's worth the extra work just for the way it makes our home smell while cooking!

Then I mix up a batch of taco seasoning.
It's a good feeling to have a jar of it in the cabinet for days when I need to make a really quick meal.

Next, I move on to the computer to print up the camping list for hubby and me because we're planning on going camping pretty soon and I can't wait!

Well, that's it for my contented little morning since it's almost time for lunch now and then time to start supper.

I think a quote from one of my favorite all-time writers, Norman Vincent Peale, in his book The Power of Positive Thinking sums up my life's outlook pretty well:

To become a happy person
have a clean soul,
eyes that see romance in the commonplace,
a child's heart,
and spiritual simplicity.

I hope you have a great day and a wonderful week, my friend!

A Dreamy Kind of Day

Well, no pictures for my blog today.  Blogger is being very contrary and refuses to let me upload any but I'm posting anyway, so "Hah, Blogger!"

While the washer and dryer were catching up with my laundry chores for me, I took a walk out in the "brisk" winter air.  It's 21 degrees with a wind chill factor of 7 degrees, but the sun is shining and I bundled up.  Now I'm back home in front of the fire and plan to take a little break after putting in my next load of laundry.

I have some wonderful reading and dreaming material waiting for me.  I wish I could show you the picture but I'll just describe it.  There's sunlight streaming through the living room window and falling on my comfy chair that's holding a soft blanket, the book I'm currently reading ( Grace by Richard Paul Evans), and a brand new seed catalog that the mail carrier brought me today.  Such dream material, I can just picture my summer vegetable garden!  Now I'm going to make a cup of hot lemon tea and enjoy my reading time before the dryer rudely buzzes out my name.

Keeping warm, keeping busy

Just thought I'd stop with my busyness for a minute to let everyone know where I am and what I'm doing.  I'm close to the fireplace in my little crafty corner working on Christmas gifts.

Can't show pics of the gifts yet ~  well, I might show the gift I'm making myself when I get it finished.  :)

We woke up to a white world this morning.  Not snow, just a very heavy frost and a temperature of 20 degrees. In Alabama!  I'll just have to be contented with enjoying the company of my two buddies (below) while I enjoy everyone else's snow pictures.

Got snow pictures?  Share your link in my comments section.  I'd love to visit!

So it's back to normal...

Thanksgiving's over.
The turkey is almost gone.
I'm making my menu for this week.

I have a busy week planned:
Grocery buying today.
Working at the food pantry tomorrow.
I also have plans for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

But I did take a little time to dream-wish this morning.
My sweet hubby is wanting me to give him Christmas gift suggestions, so I've been searching Etsy.
Here's what caught my eye:

At Your Witts End Etsy Shop

I love the shampoo bars I've been getting from Chagrin Valley and these look great too.

CT Natural Works Soap Shop

I have trouble making a Christmas list because I'm a very contented lady.
If I'm surrounded by my family at Christmas, that's gift enough for me.
But I don't mind sweet little surprises.
I mean, if sweet hubby insists.

Picking out a new washer/dryer...Who knew it could be so complicated?!

Washing clothes should be a simple chore, right?
Just throw the clothes in the washer with a scoop of my handmade detergent,
push start and wait for the cycle to end so I can hang my fresh laundry on the line.

Well, that's fine and dandy until you go to replace your old washer/dryer combo because the old washer decides to start oiling your clothes and the 29 year old dryer's knob falls off.

Who knew there would be so many choices in the store now?
Should I get a front-loader?  A top loader with an agitator?  Top loader without an agitator?
All these decisions made my head spin.
I don't like too many choices, that's why I buy almost all my groceries at Aldi. :)

So, after reading all the pros/cons on online reviews, I chose....
Big surprise here...
I chose the old tried and true top loading machine with an agitator.
Mostly because I hate changes (almost as much as I hate choices).

I got this new Maytag Centennial set yesterday and it's been chugging away all morning cleaning all the laundry we brought home from our weekend camping trip.

So far, it seems to be doing a great job with cleaning  BUT  I must say it is sort of loud and it takes longer to run a wash load than my old GE model did.  Guess I'll just have to get used to a little change after all.

Speaking of change,  I'm still trying to get the red out...of my hair that is.  I've treated it with another dose of Vitamin C/shampoo mixture this morning.  I don't know if it's any lighter but it shouldn't get a cold this winter.  :)

Thank you for stopping by my blog today, hope you leave a comment to let me know you were here.  Traffic in Blogland has been pretty slow lately, probably due to everyone out enjoying the beautiful fall weather and I don't blame them a bit, in fact, that's what I've been doing too!

Dreaming in Full Color

Like always, when winter comes knocking on my door I'm ready to brighten up our home for hibernation.  I'm thinking of doing that with a new quilt for our bed this year.

I thought about making one similar to the table cover I made a couple of years ago, just a little bigger.
When I walk into my breakfast room the bright colors always make me happy.
I love piecing quilt tops BUT here's a little secret,
I don't really like to quilt.

I've saved this tutorial on my Pinterest board for months now.

I could quilt the pieces (on the machine) as I go and when the top is finished, the work is done.
TA-DA!

And goodness knows, I've got tons of pretty cotton scraps just waiting around to be made into something useful and cheery.

When Life Hands You Lemons

A friend gave me a HUGE bag of lemons the other day.  I love lemon in my water so I pulled out my old-fashioned juicer and started washing, slicing, and squeezing lemons.  It took quite a while!

I strained the juice, put it in ice trays and popped them into the freezer.  Later, the frozen cubes were transferred to a large zip top freezer bag and now every night I have a refreshing glass of ice water with fresh frozen lemon juice.  It's quite a treat!

My Own Diet Plan ~ maybe I should write a book

I've found a way to get my daily servings of fruits and veggies in and it's really helping with my weight too!

What I've been doing lately is at my meals, I've been eating my fruits and vegetables first.  That way I'm not stuffed with the "first foods" of meat and bread, not leaving room for the fruits and vegetables I know I need.  And because of that, I don't eat as much of the entrĂ©e.

Simplistic I know, but hey, I'm a simple kind of gal.

Here's a current sample of my daily menu:
  • Breakfast:  bowl of old fashioned oatmeal with rounded teaspoon each of honey and peanut butter, splash of whole milk. Black coffee,  1/2 cup fruit juice
  • Lunch:  First I eat a bowl of fruit (whatever is in season; today was sliced apple, strawberries, grapes, kiwi ~ see picture above), then I have my entrĂ©e (today it was leftover chicken pot pie), and 16 ounces of whole milk
  • Supper:  Tonight we're having chicken/dressing, and stir-fried zucchini/onions.  (I'll eat the zucchini/onions first, then the chicken/dressing.
Note:  I buy 98% or more of my groceries at Aldi.  They have the fruits and vegetables that are currently in season at great prices!

Who knows, I may even throw caution to the wind tonight and make a dessert!  After seeing all the pumpkin specialty foods in the store today ~ coffee creamer, pumpkin flavored cream cheese, pumpkin bread mixes ~ and after reading the long list of ingredients in a few of them, I threw a can of pumpkin into my cart (only ingredient was pumpkin).  Then I grabbed a half gallon of vanilla ice cream (didn't look at its ingredients:), for good measure.  I don't know what I'll make but I bet I can find something yummy on Pinterest and I'll top it with ice cream, insuring its yumminess.

So if you count up my fruits/veggies for the day it comes to at least five, not counting the pumpkin dessert and vegetables in the chicken pot pie (which I made from scratch with fresh vegetables).  I know that They've now upped the desired daily servings to 8-11, but I'm trying to be realistic.  If I put 8-11 servings of fruits/vegetables into my short little body, I wouldn't have room left over for anything else and I have no intention of giving up meat, bread, whole milk, and an occasional sweet treat.

The great benefits that go along with getting these healthy servings in, other than weight loss, are that I'm having more energy and things are more regular if you know what I mean.

What about you?  How many servings of fruits/veggies do you get a day?
Do you have a fun/creative way of getting them in?  I'd love to hear!

Mail Order Dog Biscuits?

When opening my mailbox I often find dog biscuits laying on top of the coupons and bills.
Our mail lady loves dogs and dogs love her.
Maggie usually meets her at the mailbox for her treats but if she comes during Maggie's naptime, she has started leaving them in the mailbox.

I'm talking about one little spoiled dog.

And now it's out to the garden for me on this dark, misty morning.  The ripe tomatoes are weighing down the plant limbs so I've got to get my buckets out and relieve them of their loads.  That means I'll be canning again today.

I got most of my Wednesday household chores done yesterday and we're having a simple supper tonight, sloppy Joes, since a canning job keeps me tied up most of the day.

The promise of a lunch out with my friends tomorrow keeps me moving today!
